Buying a single: you pick the card
A single is one specific card, bought or traded for on purpose. You know exactly what you're getting before you commit: the name, the set, the printing, and the condition as described. That certainty is the whole point. If you're finishing a set, replacing a damaged copy, or you just love one particular card, a single is the direct route.
The work with singles happens before you buy. Look at clear photos of the front, back, corners and edges. Match the set symbol area, card number and printing to what you expect. If the card is slabbed, check the certification number yourself on the grader's site. Grading Basics walks through that check, and How to Trade Cards Safely covers the rest of the exchange.
Pulling from packs: you pick the pack
When you open a pack you choose the pack, not the cards. What comes out is random. For a lot of collectors that is the appeal: the moment of the reveal, and building a collection out of whatever turns up, one open at a time. A binder filled that way has a story behind every page.
Random has a cost you should say out loud. The cards you get aren't tied to the price you paid, in either direction. Some packs will feel great and plenty will be ordinary. If you open packs, open them for the opening, and let whatever you pull be the collection.
If you want one exact card, packs are the wrong tool
Pack odds, in HoloHunt and elsewhere, describe the chance of a tier or a rarity, not a particular card. The card you want shares its tier with every other card filed there. That means the chance of landing that exact card in a given pack is smaller than the tier chance you see on the screen, sometimes much smaller, and no number of packs guarantees it.
So if the goal is a specific card, buy it or trade for it. It's the predictable route. Opening packs to reach one card turns a known cost into an unknown one. Pack Odds Explained goes further into why tier odds and card odds are different things.
Set the budget before the first open
Opening packs is entertainment spending. Decide what you're comfortable spending before you start, in dollars, and stop when you reach it. Don't raise the limit halfway through because you're after one particular card. That's the moment to switch to buying the single.
A few habits help:
- Pick a number for the month, not just for tonight.
- Read the odds screen every time, before you pay.
- Take a break between sessions rather than opening everything at once.
- If opening stops being fun, stop opening.
In HoloHunt, packs are bought with stamps, which you load ahead of time. Loading a fixed amount and stopping when it runs out is an easy way to keep to a budget. HoloHunt is 18+.
How HoloHunt handles both
Packs. The HoloHunt Pack is 300 stamps ($3) for five real cards drawn at random from the vault, common to secret. The odds for every slot are on screen before you pay, and nothing is guaranteed. Every card you pull is a real card held under your name. You can hold it, ship it to yourself, or trade it back for stamps toward another pack. The stamp amount is shown before you confirm.
Singles. HoloHunt doesn't sell singles. There is no selling in the app at all. To go after a specific card, put it on your wanted list and trade for it card for card with another collector. The card shows up in your archive as a WANTED ghost tile until you scan the real one.
What stamps are not. Stamps are prepaid store credit for packs and shipping. They never turn into cash, including stamps you get from a trade-back, and they can't move between accounts.
A QUICK WAY TO DECIDE
- You want this exact card: buy the single or trade for it.
- You want the open and you're happy with whatever comes: a pack, inside a budget you set first.
- You want to know the odds before paying: read the pack screen, slot by slot.
- You want cash back out: HoloHunt isn't built for that. Stamps are never cash.
Questions
Is opening packs cheaper than buying singles?
There's no general answer, and HoloHunt doesn't claim one. A pack's price doesn't tell you what the cards inside are worth, and nothing in a pack is guaranteed. If one specific card is the goal, buying or trading for it directly is the predictable route.
Can I get a specific card on HoloHunt?
Not by buying it, because HoloHunt has no selling. Add it to your wanted list and trade for it card for card with another collector.
What happens to cards I pull but don't want?
You can hold them in the vault, ship them to yourself, or trade them back for stamps toward your next pack. The stamp amount is shown before you confirm.
Can I turn stamps into cash?
No. Stamps are prepaid store credit for packs and shipping. They never convert to cash.
